TRALI
Under-diagnosed, under-appreciated, and in many cases, unknown! Transfusion-related Acute Lung Injury (TRALI) is the "stealthy" transfusion reaction.
if you were to perform a survey of physicians and ask them specifically about what they believe to be the most common cause of transfusion-related death in the United States today, chances are you would get a variety of answers. You would hear about acute hemolytic reactions and hepatitis viruses, but not too many mentions of Transfusion-related Acute Lung Injury, or TRALI. However, TRALI is and has been the number one cause of transfusion-related death reported to the FDA for at least the last five years.
In this section, we will examine the basics of TRALI, discussing the latest thoughts in rapidly developing research. There is still much that we do not know about TRALI, but I will try to let you know what is current as much as possible.
